Nurse Helps Dementia Patient Locate Son After 17 Years!

After nearly 20 years, Anthony Bookert has been reunited with his mom and her nurse brought them back together. He lost touch with his mother, Gail, who has dementia, 17 years ago, but nurse Susan Franco was determined to find Gail’s family. Staffers at the Virginia hospital where Gail is being treated believed she had no family to contact, but Franco poured over her files until she found her son.

Gail had reportedly lived in a group home and had been in and out of the hospital and Bookert says he hadn’t seen his mom since 2003. He says he was happy to find out she’s alive and thanked Franco for going above and beyond to reunite them during National Nurses Week. He’s still not able to visit his mom in person because of Coronavirus restrictions, but they’ve talked on the phone and he’s been dropping things off for her at the hospital.

“It’s a blessing,” Bookert says. And Franco adds, “I’m just so glad that I could be a part of that.”
