The Prince and Princess Of Wales, Prince William and Kate Middelton capped their three-day visit to Boston by attending a gala event Friday evening at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway where they awarded the Earthshot Prize to five winners. The Prince created the Earthshot Prize in an effort to push forward breakthroughs to help the environment, with urgency and scale is needed now to protect the environment.
In keeping with the event's earth-friendly theme, guests were asked not to purchase new dresses or suits for the evening. Kate adhered to the sustainable fashion guidelines in a bright green off-the-shoulder gown by Solace London, which she rented from HURR, a rental platform in the UK for designer dresses. Anyone interested in feeling like a princess can go rent the dress for themself on HURR!
The five winners from Earthshot's each received $1.2 million in grants to go toward their project's goals. The winners, which were announced on Friday night, were:
- A female-founded startup that's providing cleaner-burning biomass stoves in Africa
- A United Kingdom company making biodegradable packaging from seaweed
- A "greenhouse-in-a-box" concept created to increase yields on small farms in India
- A technique for transforming atmospheric carbon into rock in Oman in the Middle East
- A woman-led effort to create a new generation of indigenous rangers in Australia.
