“Y'all really did break the internet asking for this collab…”
Cody Johnson instantly agreed to join Christian singer-songwriter Brandon Lake on “When A Cowboy Prays,” a duet that arrived on Friday (January 9). Lake teamed up with Jacob Sooter, Hank Bentley and Derrick Southerland to write the powerful, faith-fueled ballad, which he originally debuted in September 2025. Johnson sat next to Lake in the recording studio in a clip he shared on his Instagram story, and explained, “ Brandon played this song live, apparently, some time back, and called me and said, ‘would you be willing to be on the song?’ Because you demanded it. You broke the internet. I immediately said ‘yes.’ I’m a huge fan. …You said it, you got it.”
“When a cowboy prays / It starts raining in Oklahoma/ Long lost sons come home to momma/ And those stubborn horses break/ When a cowboy prays/ It's a whisper and a rumble/ It's as strong as it is humble/ This old world just ain't the same/ When a cowboy prays”
Lake wrote in a caption on Instagram that fans “really did break the internet asking for this collab… you said it, you got it.” Johnson added that he’s “honored to be part of such an incredible song.”
“When A Cowboy Prays” is Lake’s latest team-up with an award-winning country artist. The Dallas, Texas-born Christian worship singer previously released a new, soulful version of “Hard Fought Hallelujah” with 2025 iHeartRadio Music Awards Country Artist of the Year Jelly Roll. Lake is also known for “That’s Who I Praise,” “Gratitude,” “1,000,000 Reasons Why” and more. Listen to “When A Cowboy Prays” here:
