OfficerJoe Ponzo was vacationing with his family at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire when he became a real-life hero. He was boating when he saw a glider crash into the water and he called the state police, then rushed over to the scene in his boat and worked with other boaters to rescue the pilot.
Ponzo, a 23-year-veteran of the Stoneham, Massachusetts police force, reports that the man was conscious and alert when he brought him to emergency responders on shore. New Hampshire State Police Chief James McIntyre credits Ponzo with saving the pilot’s life.
"Even off-duty on vacation with our families we are never truly off the job when duty calls," McIntyre said. “We credit Joe with helping to save this man’s life and springing into action when he saw someone in need.”
