A pair of teenage girls got lost in a park in Tennessee and authorities credit an app with saving their lives and helping to find them. The Murfreesboro Police Department suggests that without the What3words location app, there may have been a very different end to this story.
According to officials, the girls called 911 after trying for an hour to find their way back to their car after dark using Google maps. They were lost in the hiking trails in Barfield Park and the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department was called to the scene with all-terrain vehicles and a drone with infrared technology to help with the search. But firefighters used the What3words app to pinpoint the teen’s location after finding out one of them had the app on her phone.
The girls were brought out by all-terrain vehicles and neither of them was hurt. The app was such a success, the Murfreesboro Communications Center plans to have training for What3words by the end of September. “This is a valuable tool to aid 9-1-1 operators and first responders in locating anyone who finds themselves lost, injured, or in need of help in an unfamiliar location,” explains Murfreesboro Emergency Communications Director Seth Russell.
