An 11-year-old boy in Georgia is being honored as a hero for saving his siblings and cousins from a house fire earlier this month. In the early hours of July 4th, Calil Gillis woke up and saw a blaze climbing up to his window and he realized their home was filled with smoke.
He sprang into action, waking his two siblings and his two cousins and he was able to get everyone out safely, even though the house was engulfed in flames. Both of his parents were at work, but he rescued all of the kids and no one was hurt. Douglas County has presented him with an award for his life-saving heroic efforts.
The family lost everything in the fire, but they’re counting their blessings that all of the kids are alive and well. Gillis’ father,Bryant Goodwincredits the fire drills the family holds regularly with keeping them safe. “They followed it to a T and I just thank God for them,” he says.
