The World’s Longest Hockey Game was just played in Canada in bitterly cold weather. Temperatures plunged down to between minus 40 and minus 67 degrees during the game, which lasted more than 250 hours. They hit the ice on February 4th and 40 people took turns playing on an outdoor rink 24 hours a day, but it was all for a good cause.
Since 2003, the have been raising money for the Cross Cancer Institute in Alberta, Canada. This was the seventh edition of the hockey game and it broke its own Guinness World Record with 252 hours over 11 days, while raising about $1.5-million for the cause.
It was so cold that pucks shattered while being passed, skate blades broke in half, pads cracked and pieces of masks fell off as glue couldn’t hold in the frigid weather. “The players were troopers,” explains event organizer Kate Gallagher. “They were warriors.”
