DNA Test Reunites Mom & Son For First Time In 54 Years!

More than half a century since a closed adoption, a mother and her son have finally been reunited. Mary Eileen Mooney was just 18 when she gave birth to the baby boy on Long Island and she gave him up for adoption just a few days later. In the years since his birth in 1967, she’s searched for him, but didn’t have any luck, until last month.

Mooney did a 23andMe DNA test and matched with Bill White in March. The genetic testing service led her to her son, who had also recently done the test and was looking to find his biological mother. The pair was reunited this week for the first time in 54 years and they’re both thrilled!

“I have so much gratitude for this amazing woman,” White says. “Just to be able to hug her there was unbelievable, one of the greatest days of my life.”

Making their reunion even more special? It was Mooney’s birthday and she got to spend it with her son. White also brought her an early Mother’s Day card, the first one she’s ever gotten.
